Mowing Tips: Weed Control, Fertilizer & Bio-nutrients

The smell of fresh cut grass — is there anything better?

Maybe, the smell of fresh baked cookies, but that’s something we can’t help you with. We can help you grow and maintain Great Green Grass.

In Middle Tennessee, you’ve probably already pulled your mower out of the garage, tuned it up, changed the blades and even mowed your lawn a few times. While you likely have the mowing basics down, here are a few expert tips to combat weeds and crabgrass and to keep your lawn properly fertilized.

Weed Control

Weeds are the worst. They look terrible, and more importantly, they use water and nutrients that could be feeding your grass. Combat weeds by applying a pre-emergent herbicide treatment in the early spring to prevent the germination of weeds. You can then spot treat weeds that do grow with post-emergent herbicide throughout the summer as necessary.

You can also help control weeds by raising your mower blades and keeping your grass just a little bit longer. At longer lengths, grass acts as shade to prevent weed seeds from germinating in the sunlight. Longer grass also fosters deeper root development and keeps it from drying out as quickly. We recommend you mow your lawn when the grass grows to a height of 2 to 3 inches, and only cut 1/3 off the top of your grass at a time.

Fertilizer & Bio-nutrients

A soil test can help you figure out of your soil is acidic, alkaline or neutral, which is what you need to know before purchasing fertilizer. The test can also help you determine what bio-nutrients your lawn needs. Fertilizer and bio-nutrients are the one-two punch that gives your lawn its nice green color. It also prevents crabgrass, which is one of the most prevalent grassy weeds found in Tennessee.

It’s also important to correct any soil issues before reseeding your lawn in the fall. You can buy a home soil test kit at any of your neighborhood’s hardware stores.
