Sod Webworm Damage
We see webworms in all kinds of grass – St. Augustine grass, carpet grass, Bermuda grass, and Zoysia grass. They are not picky on the grass they destroy, but pay close attention to these telltale signs of webworm damage in your lawn.
- Chewed up circular areas
Many mistake this damage for disease, but if you look closer, you will see that it is actually damage from chewing. Young webworms feed on the mid-part of the leaf. Older larvae will completely strip off the leaves.
- Silky webbing
Like most worms, the sod webworm leaves a trail of silky webbing as they crawl through your grass. The best time to look for this silky web is in the early morning when there is dew on the ground.
- Birds
Have you seen more birds in your yard lately? This could be a clear sign that you have a worm problem!
Armyworm Damage
Armyworms love all types of grass and weeds, but Bermuda grass is their favorite. Take a look at your lawn, your pastures, and your fairways for this little pest.
- Brown patches
These brown patches rapidly grow before your eyes. Armyworms feed mostly at night, so you may wake up to this terror. At first, these brown patches seem to be from drought or disease, but take a closer look.
- Birds
Again, birds! Are there several birds clustered in one area of your lawn? See if you can find these armyworms tucked under your grass.
