3 Tips to Spruce Up Your Patio

It’s patio time Nashville! If you’re looking for ways to spruce up your favorite escape, look no further. We have three ideas to make your patio the envy of the neighborhood. Combine this patio guide with Pure Green’s spring lawn care to-do list to create a complete oasis in your backyard.

1. Go Bold

Outside spaces can get away with bright colors and bold patterns that would seem overwhelming inside your home. So, go ahead and paint those Adirondack chairs, flea market finds and antique metal picks. Just make sure you chose paints and stains that can stand up to the wear and tear of Middle Tennessee’s weather. You can also recover faded cushions with brightly patterned outdoor fabric to give them new life for this year’s patio season.

2. Go DIY

Repurposing found or inexpensive items can be an excellent way to update your patio on a tight budget. For example, you can create a daybed out of four pallets and a few 2x4s. Top with a homemade cushion for the perfect DIY look. Or, go one step further and hang the daybed from the patio ceiling, secured by reinforced hooks, to create a relaxing patio swing.

You can also use pallets to create outdoor tables and planters. Wine barrels can be repurposed as end tables, and wooden wine crates work great as rustic planters as well. The possibilities are endless. What do you have lying around in the garage that could be reused?

3. Go Floral

Easy-to-grow flowers are a colorful and fragrant addition to any patio, especially varieties that work great in pots, hanging baskets and window boxes. Zinnias — which grow in varying heights and almost every color except blue — begonias and geraniums are our personal favorites. Check out this HGTV article that gives ten more examples of flowers that even beginners can’t kill.

When filling a window box, remember this trick: every flower arrangement should include a “thriller” (a tall, show-stopping flower or plant), a “spiller” (a plant that will grow over the sides of the box) and a “filler” (a low-growing plant that fills in the empty spaces).

Another great flower idea we found on Listotic is to stencil your address number on flowerpots for a creative way to identify your home.
